WHO adopts resolution requesting a Global Alcohol Strategy
WHO adopts resolution requesting a
Global Alcohol Strategy
The WHO Executive Board in its 122nd session at Geneva in January 2009 has unanimously recommended the World Health Assembly the adoption of a resolution requesting the WHO Director General to prepare a draft global strategy to reduce harmful use of alcohol that is based on all available evidence and existing best practices and that addresses relevant policy options, taking into account different national, religious and cultural contexts, including national public health problems, needs and priorities, and differences in Member States’ resources, capacities and capabilities. more..
Draft Strategy Consultation in Progress

WHO Regional Technical Consultations with Member States in all Six WHO Regions are in progress for preparing the Draft Strategy to be tabled before the next WHO World Health Assembly in May 2010. It will take place as follows:

-  South-East Asia: 24-26 February, Bangkok, Thailand.
-  Africa: 3-5 March, Brazzaville, Congo.
-  Western Pacific: 24-26 March, Auckland, New Zealand.
-  Eastern Mediterranean: 6-9 April, Cairo, Egypt.
-  Europe: 20-23 April, Copenhagen, Denmark.
-  The Americas: 6-8 May, Sao Paolo, Brazil. more..
October 2nd to be World No Alcohol Day
Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary could soon be a dry day globally. India has officially proposed at the World Health Assembly in Geneva that October 2, be declared ‘World No Alcohol Day’. Union Health Minister Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, who led the Indian delegation attending the WHA, also proposed setting up of a Framework Convention on Alcohol Control similar to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). more...
Alcohol in India at a new high
India is one of the largest producers of alcohol in the world and there has been a steady increase in its production over the last 15 years, according to new statistics. India is a dominant producer of alcohol in South-East Asia, with 65 per cent of the total share, and contributes to around 7 percent of the total alcohol beverage imports into the region. more..
